MTG Play Boosters: What are they?!

Magic The Gathering February 05, 2024 - 04:00 PM 0 Comments Matt Farmer

Booster Packs are a core part of any TCG and they are perhaps one of the most loved and controversial parts of the hobby. On one hand, the randomness of booster packs adds an extra level of fun and excitement to opening products. On the other hand, this level of randomness can lead to unsatisfying openings and having to buy more and more packs to get the few cards you're after.

Magic the Gathering and Wizards of the Coast sought to revolutionise the way that booster packs are utilised with their introduction of new types of packs. They split the traditional booster packs into new different versions, starting primarily in Throne of Eldraine! These were the Draft boosters and Set boosters that have defined the last couple of years of Magic the Gathering! However, these 2 types of booster will be phased out and replaced by Play Boosters!

Play Booster

Starting with Murders at Karlov Manor, Draft Boosters and Set Boosters will be replaced with Play Boosters. WOTC have decided to introduce them primarily due to the popularity of Set Boosters and the relative unpopularity of Draft Boosters. Play Boosters retain the general fun structure of the Set Booster but are now designed to be draftable. This means that constructed players will still get a lot out of their packs, but stores can now stock a smaller number of products and retain the ability to hold limited events such as draft! Play Boosters will contain 15 cards and have a price similar to Set Boosters.

Each Play Booster includes 15 cards:

  • 6 Commons
  • 1 Common or The List
  • 3 Uncommons
  • 1 Rare or Mythic Rare
  • 1 Basic Land
  • 1 Non-foil Wildcard (A card of any rarity from the set. Guaranteed to be non-foil.)
  • 1 Foil Wildcard (A card of any rarity from the set. Guaranteed to be foil.)
  • 1 Token, art card, play aide, or ad card
