Disney Lorcana The First Chapter Review - Playability, Collectability and More!

Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter has been out for a few weeks now, and it's definitely made an impression on the TCG community. It's not all that often we see newcomers make headway like Lorcana has, but when they do there's something worth talking about. With that in mind, we'd like to give our thoughts on the playability, collectability and more!

Collectability

For some of the biggest Disney fans who maybe aren't too into playing trading card games, Lorcana was the perfect answer to a question we didn't even know existed. The First Chapter made shockwaves across the world when it was announced, and with the folks over at Disney trickling the card reveals down bit by bit, we saw some of our favourite characters making their way in full foil fantasia.

The First Chapter contains two rare slots per pack, that means you have the chance of grabbing anything from a Rare to a Legendary card. These cards could include anything from the iconic Disney mascot Mickey Mouse, to the adorable Stitch! The inclusion of many recognisable Disney characters meant that TCG and Disney fans around the world could unite to collect and discuss this TCG newcomer! But if you thought that's where the excitement ends, you'd be wrong. Though you have two guaranteed Rare slots in each pack, you're also guaranteed a holo which can be any rarity. You heard that right, not only could you pull three Legendaries in just one pack, but you could even pick up an Enchanted Rare! An Enchanted Rare is Lorcana's version of a borderless card, and they are truly stunning. Check out some examples below!

With all cards being available in standard and foil treatment, this first set is a crazy 408 cards with an extra 12 enchanted rares - giving you a total of 420 cards to collect! The thrill of the hunt is grabbing collectors with some of the Enchanted Rares going for over £300, such as Elsa!

Playability

There has been a lot of innovation with Lorcana being so new. It's a breath of fresh air in the community and it means everyone starts from square one, allowing players to be wholly creative trying all different combinations of Inks. It's looking out the gates that Steel has become the strongest and most consistent of the Inks in tournament play within the first few weeks of release, with cards such as Tinkerbell - Giant Fairy, Whole New World and Grab Your Sword being the frontrunners.
Furthermore, the new never-before-seen mechanic with song cards can not only be played for their Ink cost, but can also have the ability to have a corresponding character sing the song - negating the Ink cost! This is an amazing choice from the design team of Ryan Miller and Steve Warner, giving a new dimension to the game and pushing players to not be limited by their current Ink pots!

Floodborn

Floodborn is a unique take on a selection of characters from Disney's IP. This means that a selection of characters such as Captain Hook and Hades have totally different stories to the ones we know and love. These characters are indicated by the title on the card, and the Shift ability. These cards work like VMAX cards in Pokemon, they allow you to summon a Floodborn character for a lesser summon cost if you are essentially evolving a card with the corresponding name. For example, Aladdin, Heroic Outlaw states that you can pay 5 Ink to play the character on top of one of your characters named Aladdin. This means that, instead of paying 7 to summon, you only pay 5. Easy, right? This essentially throws out the rulebook on gameplay, and with the next set seemingly focusing on Floodborn characters, we're excited to see how this mechanic develops.

Dreamborn

If Storyborn cards are your canon characters, and Floodborn is a What If? situation, Dreamborn is your middle ground. Dreamborn is essentially how the Illumineer (you) has imagined this character as they have been summoned, so there's a little twist in the way the card is played. Elsa, Snow Queen's flavour text explains it perfectly; Recreated by magical Ink, Elsa found herself in an entirely new world. Fortunately, ice works the same way everywhere.

If there's one thing that Disney Lorcana has done, it's solidified its name in the TCG community as a big hitter. With everything that the First Chapter brought, we cannot wait to find out what is in store when Rise of the Floodborn releases in early December!
